It was a powerful reminder that our job in math instruction is to help students make sense of the mathematics before we introduce rules, shortcuts, or memorized procedures. The session centered on how students build deep understanding when teachers focus on meaning—using models, reasoning, and conceptual clarity—rather than relying on tricks or hand motions that don’t transfer. We explored what it looks like to slow down, be intentional, and guide students to understand the why behind the math so they can confidently apply it in new situations.
